Historical Facts About Corfu
Corfu also known as Kerkyra, owns its name from the daughter of river god, Assopos. Many historical evidences are found in Corfu since the formation of island in Paleolithic Era. First Greek settlers came to this island and later refugees from Corinth founded colonies on the island.
The new colonies developed much and became competitor to the Corinth. The alliance between the two towns lasted for almost a century when Macedonians conquered Corfu and placed it under their protection. The island was attacked by Spartans, Illyrians and by Romans at different times.
Romans ruled the island for many centuries. The was divided into the Eastern and Western Empires. The Eastern Roman Empire became later the Byzantine Empire and included the island of Corfu.
In the middle of the thirteenth century, Charles of Angou, the French king of Sicily conquered the island of Corfu and converted all the churches to Catholicism. His attempt failed and Corfu fell again under the Venetian rule.
